French 1594-1665 Nicolas Poussin Galleries The finest collection of Poussin's paintings, in addition to his drawings, is located in the Louvre in Paris. Besides the pictures in the National Gallery and at Dulwich, England possesses several of his most considerable works: The Triumph of Pan is at Basildon House, near to Pangbourne, (Berkshire), and his great allegorical painting of the Arts at Knowsley. The later version of Tancred and Erminia is at the Barber Institute in Birmingham. At Rome, in the Colonna and Valentini Palaces, are notable works by him, and one of the private apartments of Prince Doria is decorated by a great series of landscapes in distemper. Throughout his life he stood aloof from the popular movement of his native school. French art in his day was purely decorative, but in Poussin we find a survival of the impulses of the Renaissance coupled with conscious reference to classic work as the standard of excellence. In general we see his paintings at a great disadvantage: for the color, even of the best preserved, has changed in parts, so that the harmony is disturbed; and the noble construction of his designs can be better seen in engravings than in the original. Johan Gustaf Sandberg, född 1782, död 1854, var målare; han var professor i teckning vid Konstakademien från 1828, och direktör där 1845?C1853. Sandberg ägnade sig främst åt historiemåleri, med motiv ur nordisk mytologi och svensk historia. Hans främsta verk inom detta område är kalkmålningarna över Gustav Vasa i Uppsala domkyrka. Han målade också en mängd porträtt. Efter akademiska studier i Åbo med början 1783, och Uppsala, dit han flyttade 1788, blev han filosofie magister 1791. Han blev 1792 extra ordinarie kanslist i akademiska kansliet. Juris utriusque kandidat blev han 1792 och kort därefter docent vid juridiska fakulteten, blev juris licentiat 1800 och utnämndes 1807 till jurisprudentiä, oeconomiæ et commerciorum professor i Uppsala. Juris utriusque doktor 1810; arbetande ledamot i Lagkommissionen 1811-1814; ledamot av Krigsvetenskapsakademien 1810, Lantbruksakademien 1812, Vetenskapssocieteten i Uppsala 1829 samt flera andra lärda samfund. År 1834 erhöll han adlig värdighet och tog avsked från sin professur 1837. Lars Rabenius ligger begravd på Uppsala gamla kyrkogård.
Adolf-Ulrik Wertmuller
Swedish Painter, 1751-1811,was a Swedish painter whose notable works include Danaë receiving Jupiter in a Shower of Gold. Wertmuller was born in Stockholm and studied art at home before moving to Paris in 1772 to study under his cousin Alexander Roslin and French painter Joseph-Marie Vien. On July 30, 1784, Wertmuller was elected to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. Wertmuller was commissioned by Gustav III of Sweden for a portrait of Marie Antoinette, which is now in the Nationalmuseum at Stockholm. In 1787, he produced his masterpiece Danae, a work which proved controversial as one of the earliest female nude paintings exhibited in America. Wertmuller first emigrated to the United States in May 1794 and continued his portrait work, most notably of General Washington, but in 1796 was called back to Sweden, eventually returning to Philadelphia in 1800. Wertmuller was married to Elizabeth Henderson, granddaughter of noted early American painter Gustavus Hesselius, on January 8, 1801, and two years later retired to a plantation in Claymont, Delaware, where he lived the final years of his life.
